Sunday night, AMC’s The Walking Dead returned from its holiday hiatus. Everyone including myself was talking about its return. The excitement was about as high as I have seen for any TV show which still amazes me for a show about a zombie apocalypse. I honestly think that even if you hate Twilight, you have to thank them for becoming popular, so that a show like True Blood would get green lit, which led to more supernatural shows being more commonplace paving the way for The Walking Dead to being picked up by AMC.
Even if you haven’t been watching The Walking Dead, I’m sure you have heard about its record-breaking cable ratings. It really is an amazing feat. Last nights mid-season premiere broke cable ratings records again of course it was just beating its own record from the October 14, 2012 season three premiere when 10.9 million viewers turned into the show. Last night brought in 12.3 million viewers. It is also the best telecast for a cable show with the adults 18-49 year-old demographic range with 7.7 million viewers. The show continues to prove that it is a force to be reckoned with and it proves every time it breaks a record how wrong all four networks(NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX) in the US were to turn down this series when the show was pitched to them.
Season three has been a lot better for many reasons with the main reason being that the show finally left their then oasis on a farm during last springs season finale. This season the survivors have stumbled across a fortress of protection that is a prison. We are also shown a “secure” little village called Woodbury that is run by a mysterious guy named that goes by the Governor. Before season’s end there is going to be a war between the prison and the Governor(Woodbury) which I figure will be a good push to take away the safety the survivors have while in the prison. This battle will push the survivors back into the unprotected post-apocalyptic world.
Everyone besides me seems to be in love by the character Daryl. I am finding it hard to decide why everyone feels such a strong connection towards him. It’s not that I hate Daryl, I just haven’t seen any reason to give him such praise that he seems to be getting at the moment. There are people who seriously say that they will quit watching the show if Daryl dies. That is crazy to me. There are other characters that I like a lot more such as Glen.
I have read where the comics have taken the story so far and I am left underwhelmed by where the story has ended up in the comics so far. I am left confused as to how this will develop into a continuing masterpiece of a show. The only promise of a better story is in the fact that the show and the comics have done some things completely different or even refrained from introducing some characters and story lines yet. The comics become more of a fight between the people who are surviving and getting by then about zombies. Honestly, I guess that is how this season is playing out as well. I don’t see drama between just people keeping the ratings that this show has become accustomed too. I guess also, I like the show so much, I fear for the day that it becomes just like one of the walkers that we see on every episode.
