It’s Hard To Say Goodbye

I still can’t believe that Angie Miller was the person to go home on last weeks American Idol. I knew this is always how it would be though, and secretly I was hoping she wouldn’t win and would make it to third or second place. Those two spots have produced more popular artists then the actual winning spot has for the entirety of Idol. This also makes sure that when Angie goes into the studio to record her album she will have more freedom and fewer constraints that tend to hurt the actual winners music. Angie will get to make the music that SHE wants to make, not what the STUDIO wants her to make.

Candice Glover has an awesome voice, and while I know this is a singing competition, you need someone you can market well. History has proven on Idol repeatedly that America doesn’t usually support the winners that they have voted to that honour. I think Candice has the edge over Kree at the moment, but that doesn’t mean she will go on to become a huge recording artist. I could be wrong, and I actually hope that I am, but I figure she will end up doing something like Broadway, which is awesome. Candice has an awesome voice, but I doubt I would support the record she makes. Everyone compares her to Adele, but there lies the problem… We already have Adele. Do we really need another songstress that has slightly upbeat songs that can wail to her heart is content and so good at doing it?

Kree Harrison on the other hand has been poised to actually win the top spot since the beginning of the season. Who didn’t love this everyday average girl who could belt out her lyrics? You didn’t think by looking at her that she was going to be able to sing that well. We also didn’t know who this girl was when she was shown to us cause we never saw her audition. I don’t think we saw Candice’s audition either. I feel like her popularity has fallen in the last few weeks against Candice and I cannot figure out why? Is it cause she has pretty much said she is going into country music? No, I don’t think that is right cause Idol has produced a lot of country singers in the last few years.

I was really pulling for Angie to win it all, because she was the most-talented all the way around contestant on the show. Not only can she sing really well, she also is a very talented songwriter. Something neither of the other two final contestants have shown us. Who pulls out their own original music at Hollywood week? Then who could have called that the song would be amazingly beautiful and stuns the judges? No one. It was a first in Idol history. Normally when someone pulls out an original song, you get ready for some good laughs. Not this time. I also feel like her original song ”You Set Me Free” was also what plagued her. It was said many times by the judges that she couldn’t top the performance she gave on her own song. I would most certainly agree with this, but instead of being rewarded, she gets kicked-off the show. It’s okay though. As I stated above, she will have more freedom and will have an amazing album. She already has a single that will sell, sell, sell, and that I figure will overshadow the actual winners single.

My final words are to Angie herself. Don’t take getting kicked-off of Idol as a sign that you’re done and never gonna realize your dream. You are gonna have an awesome album, career, and life.  Apparently, you are going to get to do a duet with Adam Lambert and that is freaking awesome. Even if you didn’t win the show, you are the winner in my book and this years American Idol.

Take a listen to Angie Miller’s original song ”You Set Me Free” down below. It is recorded from when she performed on the show, so you can hear Keith and Randy talking a bit. After you listen, please tell me what you think about it and what you think about Angie in the comments.

After Lately To Be Cancelled

I am very afraid that After Lately, the mockumentry of “behind-the-scenes” of Chelsea Lately, may be cancelled after tonight’s “season” finale. I am a huge Chelsea Handler and Chelsea Lately fan, so I am of course a fan of After Lately as well. I love how the shows round-table regulars and Chelsea are able to make fun of each others quirks in a light-hearted, but funny manner.

The show performed well when it premiered on March 6, 2011. I couldn’t find rating info for the first season beyond the series premiere which was watched by 1.2 million viewers. That is good for cable and definitely for E!. Season one ended after eight episodes on April 24, 2011. The second season premiered November 27, 2011 and ran thru January 29, 2012 with another eight episodes. Season two averaged 1.18 million viewers with all but two episodes getting more than a million viewers per episode.

The current season of After Lately hasn’t even attempted to come close to the ratings of the first two seasons of the series. This season premiered February 25, 2013 and concludes tonight(April 15, 2013). Once again the series has featured eight episodes and with seven of those out this season has averaged 0.30 million viewers. The show has failed to even get a half million viewers. I feel like the only thing that will save this show is that it is very cheap to make. Most of the people on the show are there anyways and it is done on the set and offices of Chelsea Lately.

Why has the show performed so badly in its third season? I think there could be a bunch of reasons for this question. I think one of the biggest problems is it is more than likely a show that many people DVR and watch later. Unfortunately, DVR watches still don’t get counted in the official TV ratings used for advertisers. It doesn’t help that the show isn’t a strong scripted show or an hour-long show, which means fewer people are going to watch it live.

I also don’t think the show benefited from only having eight episode seasons and then not coming on for over an entire year. People may have lost interest even as Chelsea Lately grows in popularity. I really hate to see the show go, but with such low ratings, I expect to say goodbye to After Lately.

Are you currently or have you in the past watched After Lately? Let me know your thoughts on the show and its probable cancellation in the comment section.

The People’s Actress

I’m not sure there has been a down to earth actress that seems to relate to us regular people. Even the most “normal” actress still seems above what the rest of us are. We finally seem to have an actress that it just one of us; she just happens to be an amazing actress. That actress I’m talking about is the Louisville, Kentucky native, Jennifer Lawrence.

If you haven’t heard of Jennifer Lawrence, you must have been dead for the last few days. That is the only way that you wouldn’t have heard anything about her. You would have had to spend the last year on an abandoned  island somewhere if you haven’t heard from her until recently. She was first noticed a few years ago when she was nominated for Best Actress with her performance in Winter’s Bone. Now her fame as escalated with her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise. I truly believe that The Hunger Games will just be a blip on this young actresses career. She is not going to be known forever as Katniss unlike her Twilight counterpart, Kristen Stewart, whom will most likely always be known as Bella.

What makes Jennifer less likely to be known for one very popular role versus someone else? It would be her acting. If you have seen Jennifer in action, you will know that this girl can act. It comes so effortlessly from her. The emotion that she is able to give off is stunning and she is destined for greater things than a young adult series turned movie, no matter how great that series may be. If you haven’t seen Silver Linings Playbook, you must now. It is the role that Jennifer was nominated and won Best Actress with this year. She plays such a complex character and gives off every emotion that she should. She does it very well at that.

Even I believe that it is impressive and admirable how unimpressed Jennifer seems to be with Hollywood. She has even talked out against these starlets that act like they’re better than everyone else. I think she has a good chance to continue her life unspoiled by the evils that Hollywood can bring out of people. We are talking about the girl who almost passed on playing Katniss cause she was fearful of becoming too famous. Jennifer just liked playing parts in movies like Winter’s Bone or Silver Linings Playbook because she just liked acting.

Many of these reasons are why Jennifer Lawrence is the people’s actress. I have heard no one bad mouth her or  say she hasn’t deserved anything that she has earned in her short career. I think in the years ahead, we will see Jennifer to more and more great films. Spotted in, we will probably see some big productions and I am hoping maybe a few comedies. If her SNL performance or her interviews are anything to go by, she could do well in comedy. Plus, I’m talking about a girl that I feel could do well in any movie she wanted to do.

Below is a video of Jennifer’s post-Oscar interview. It really shows how laid back and unimpressed with Hollywood that she has been known for. After you watch that, please leave comments on your opinion of Jennifer below in the comment section.

Good For Cinemark

When it comes it comes to places that have been affected by mass shootings, I have a very strong opinion in not knocking down the building that the shooting occurred in. I understand that for any family or friends affected by anyone that died, it may be very hard to ever return to these buildings. It is a very sad thing. Unforgivably,  life must go on for those that are still in this world and the lost lives fade into memories, great and beautiful memories. There was talk as to what Cinemark 16 in Aurora, Colorado should have done with the theatre building and now there is similar talk about Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

Cinemark decided to keep the theatre and renovate the building. I commend this action for many reasons. One reason is this lets those that cause the deaths, pain, and suffering to see that they can’t simply defeat everyone  involved. Another reason is, there isn’t always the financial backing to rebuilding something, just in a different part of town. Destroying a perfectly good building isn’t going to cause the pain and suffering that the families and community are feeling go away. Those feelings will be there, most likely for the rest of those people’s lives.

Many people think that movie theatres make a ton of money based on the $10 admission(varies in your area) to see a non-3D feature these days. I can tell you though, theatres run on very little money at all. Most money that movie theatres make comes from concessions. The ticket goes to the cost of leasing the films that the theatre are showing. The first few weeks to months if a film is doing really well, the theatre only gets about 5%-10% of that ticket price. The longer the film is out and the less popular it gets, the more money that movie theatre makes.

Many people were wanting Cinemark to close the theatre the shooting occurred in and open a new one elsewhere in Aurora. I can tell you that if they closed that location, Aurora probably would have lost a theatre. I doubt there is much financial needs to build a whole new movie theatre elsewhere. Instead, Cinemark spent one million dollars to renovate the current theatre. Then they invited the families to be the first to see it for a ceremony that was to remember the victims. Some surviving victims and victims families of the lost supported the idea. Some from the same groups did not like the idea of this event. They even saw it as “callous” and just Cinemark trying to show off a good public image.

I do think Cinemark should build some sort of memorial for the victims. That I feel will come later when the community comes together to donate the money to build such a memorial. I assume Cinemark may chip in some money and they might even take it upon themselves to build one. Some people wanted theatre 9 to be shut down and turned into a memorial. While that is a nice thought, you really don’t want something like that haunting the movie goers every time they go to see a movie.

The way I see it, Cinemark was in a lose-lose position. They had many options that they could have went through with and whichever plan was chosen would have been wrong to one group or another. There are some people who even blame Cinemark for this happening. I find that ridiculous. I feel like they did the right thing. It is better to heal instead of destroy something that has been hurt. As humans, with our bodies we try everything before we amputate a limb. That is what Cinemark is doing, they are trying to heal regularly instead of closing down for good. Again, I applaud them on their decision. It isn’t a “Hollywood” stunt, it is the most sensitive way for them to continue operating in the city of Aurora.

A New Idol

As American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said tonight at the beginning of the show, a new era for Idol has begun. An era that seems to be filled with drama fueled by the drama mama diva, Mariah Carey, herself. You could tell from the beginning the producers were going to play up the Minaj vs. Carey in a big way. The very first time you see the two together, they are rolling eyes and taking jabs at each other.

I really had no idea that Mariah Carey is so egotistical. I mean, yeah, she has an awesome voice and can hit those high notes, but personality as to count in there somewhere. Right? She really comes across as someone who thinks she is better than anyone else in the room. She really needs to remember that many younger viewers really can’t recall anything that she has done except for her amazing Christmas albums. I’m 22 and cannot think of a name of any chart topping song. I think one of the most annoying things about her on this show is how she brings every thing back to her. You could literally be talking about doing anything and she has a comparable story or something that can top it.

I think one of the funniest things tonight was when Nicki started doing her British accent. Guess what? Mariah started doing it too. It seemed like they were both trying to top the others use of the accent. It reminded me of when Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne’s characters in Bridesmaids started to try to top the other’s speech at the engagement party. It was kind of ridiculous on Mariah’s part, considering it was obviously something that Nicki was doing before she started.

In case you think I came into the show rooting for Nicki, you’re wrong. I thought maybe Nicki was provoking Mariah, a lady I assumed was down to earth and caring. I was wrong. Mariah comes across as I’ve stated, egotistical and even fake. She just seems genuinely fake to most of the contestants. But, hey! It is a win-win for Idol, because they got people like me watching after getting so bored with it two seasons ago that are watching again. So, way to go FOX and Idol.

I can’t wait to see what comes of the drama throughout the season. We have still yet to see the big blow up that occurred to make Mariah, “scared” for her life. That should be good since now Mariah has extra security because she is afraid that Nicki is going to kill her. Now if that isn’t drama, I’m not sure what exactly is?

Now it is your turn to let me know what your thoughts were on tonight’s Idol, and on the Nicki and Mariah feud down below in the comments. It is much appreciated! Thanks!

-Jake

New Year, New Britney?

Like me, Britney Spears may be taking 2013 to renew herself and do more for herself. Earlier this week it was reported that Britney Spears was not going to be returning to the singing competition show The X-Factor. Britney Spears announced that she wasn’t returning due to the fact that she was working on her new album and wouldn’t be available due to its release this year. Some people think Britney was actually not asked back to the show due to their not being a huge ratings rise this season. From what I heard, she did well. It was also reported that the higher-up’s were impressed by the way Britney handled the show and how well she judged. To me it sounds like this was just a problem like with The Voice judges, where these are current artists who are still making albums, touring, and still have a big image to hold on to.

Another piece of Britney news from this past week… Britney and her fiancé Jason Trawick have called off their engagement and broken up. The rumours have been there for months and they finally came true. I feel like Trawick was good for Britney and was put in her life to help her get her life back together. It seems like the pair have a continued good friendship and are going to try to be there for each other. Maybe after a few years the spark wasn’t there. I commend Britney on having a long engagement and seeing if things continued to go smoothly before they said “I do.”.

I think Britney is back to who she was before those “crazy” days that she became known for in the middle 2000′s. She has an amazing single with Will.i.am that while not of music genius, is a very catchy song that I love and that is doing very well. I think she has a clean slate and enough time now to create an album that even blows away her best critiqued album, 2011′s Femme Fatale. I’ve read she has experimented with some new sounds and plans on doing some stuff outside of her comfort zone. I think Britney will continue to be America’s sweetheart for years to come, if for no other reason, she’s Britney, bitch.

“American Reunion” Didn’t Impress

Universal Studios’ fourth installment of the “American Pie” franchise failed to impress me much. The first five minutes of “American Reunion” are probably the best and most funny minutes in the movie. It starts off fast, then slowly starts to head down before taking a nose-dive somewhere in the middle of the movie. You know a movie isn’t that great when you can’t wait for it to end and you keep checking the clock.

Why is it that “American Reunion” didn’t keep my interest? Possibly it is because it didn’t come anywhere near newer R-rated comedies such as “Horrible Bosses” and “Bridesmaids”. The first three movies were great and still are funny to this day. “American Reunion” feels more like a reality show about how much life sucks after high school. That sums up the movie. It can be compared to that one person everyone laughed at a few years ago, but now you and your friends are older and most of you are more mature except that one person and now the stuff that use to be funny isn’t funny anymore.

If this was a completely new movie with new characters and everything and was a comedy based on a school reunion, some of this might have been great. The point is, most of the jokes are jokes from the previous movies that just didn’t make me laugh. It didn’t help that it was the same characters doing the same stuff. All I can say is, I see why this movie was released into theatres during a typically slow movie month. It was able to do some what well due to that period. This is one movie that I can say that I am happy I ended up not seeing in theatres and only spending just a little over a dollar on it at Red Box. As far as movies in 2012, this one has been my biggest let down. Please let this be the last movie in the “American Pie” movie franchise.

What did you think about “American Reunion”? Do you agree with me or disagree? Comment below!

Rihanna and Chris Brown Again?

I am very disappointed in Rihanna’s choice to be working or even possibly dating Chris Brown again. The rumours are that she is doing an extended version of her song “Birthday Cake” or that she is possibly doing a whole new song with her. Then there is the rumour that they have been seen out together and are possibly dating again. You can say that she is just being the bigger person and forgiving him, but I don’t think that she should have ever forgiven him. I don’t think anyone that beats up on another person should be forgiven.

I guess I am even more annoyed because after the whole Chris Brown incident in November 2009 we got “Rated R”. That album was a different less fun and care free Rihanna. It was great music, but it obviously was influenced by how she was hurt and damaged not only physically, but emotionally. Then in November 2010 we got “Loud” which was still a better Rihanna emotionally but still unable to love and trust again. Then this past November, 2012, we got “Talk That Talk”. It was a fully healed Rihanna who was ready to have fun and love once again. Now I feel like she is going to ruin it by getting involved with Chris Brown. This whole process for nothing.

I guess we can’t control her, but I hate to see people make stupid mistakes. I’m not the only person who feels this way. A lot of people have been in outrage over these rumours and one rumour itself says that her management is not happy with this and anything that Rihanna and Chris are working on they don’t even want released. Hopefully, RIhanna will play it smart and these rumour will not have been true though I am highly doubting that they will be proven wrong. I guess if she didn’t learn her lesson the last time with him then if something happens again, I won’t feel sorry for her. I feel like she will have deserved it because people who abuse other people are very likely to repeat that behaviour again. I guess only time will tell what happens… I just hope that it all works out for Rihanna.
