Goodbye, Kristen!

On May 19, 2012, something horrible happened. SNL did a send off skit for one of their greatest cast members ever, Kristen Wiig. I just now decided to write this, it has just been so hard for me to think about her not being on SNL next season. Just kidding, I actually kinda forgot to write anything on here for the last few months. Anyway, it is hard to imagine Kristen Wiig missing from SNL and I am sure the show will find someone of her caliber one day, no time soon obviously. She is gonna be one tough cookie to replace. She has not left Lorne with an easy task of filling the hole she is leaving.

While I am sad to see her leave, I understand that at this point in career SNL would really be holding her back at this point. She has been in a few movies here and there in recent years, but last years Bridesmaids really got her going to the places that I am sure she has always wanted to get to go. I couldn’t be happier for her. Before Bridesmaids I would talk about Kristen Wiig and how funny he Target Lady or Gilly was on SNL and people would be like who is Kristen Wiig. After last May when Bridesmaids was released, she became a household name and I no longer had to explain who she was.

So, goodbye, Kristen… For now. We will meet again when I watch any of your sure to be astounding future films. I wouldn’t mind if I ever got to meet you in person either, or how about a part in a movie your writing? Just remember me, JakeLX.

“SNL” Entering A Turbulent Era?

Some would say that NBC’s SNL is already in a turbulent era that started a few years ago. I don’t see it that way. I love the show and I will have to say that this season has been the worse that I’ve watched, but each episode has had its moments. The skits just seem to not be as funny and the show has been lacking Andy Samberg’s SNL Digital Short moments. It seems that if you want a funny skit, it has to include the loveable and hilarious Kristen Wiig. There is a problem to that though… Kristen Wiig’s contract is up at the end of this year and it is rumoured that she has no plans on staying on SNL. Why would she? It has launched her career in Hollywood and hit her household name status with last May’s release of Bridesmaids. She really has no reason to stay on SNL and in the long run the show would hurt her further development in Hollywood. I went into this season knowing that we at home, would most likely be saying goodbye to Kristen Wiig at the end of the season. So, I’ve made peace with that fact and no we will see her in some awesome movies in the future.

Jason Sudeikis is another one rumoured to be leaving. He is probably SNL‘s number two person that needs to be in a skit if Kristen Wiig isn’t in a skit. He probably is my number two on the show as well. He has been more and more in movies and last years hit Horrible Bosses, really ironed in that he was going to be a long-lasting funny guy in Hollywood. Again, SNL would just hold him back from furthering his career in movies. I’m not as sad to see him leave SNL, but again, we will see him in the future in more movies.

Then last to be rumoured to leave is Andy Samberg. He’s funny, but I feel like on SNL the writers held back parts for him. I think it is because he spent so much time on his “digital shorts” for the show, so maybe he in turn made it easy to not be written in as many sketches. This season the shorts haven’t been that great. Normally they are music videos based on songs from The Lonely Island, but they have used most of the songs, if not all, on the shorts already from their current album. Andy Samberg has been in a few movies here and there and has really started to be in more and more. His biggest part in a movie is coming out soon in Adam Sandler’s new movie, That’s My Boy, where he has a lead role, playing Adam Sandler’s son, that Sandler’s character had when he was in his early teen’s. So, we will be seeing him in more movies I am sure.

The more I read the history of SNL, I really understand that this happens. The people come and go, with some going on to bigger and better things, and some just fading away. Not all are on the show forever, except for Kenan Thompson. The show apparently goes from bad periods to really good periods. I think if all three of the above do leave at the end of the season that the show may enter into a bad period. They haven’t really found awesome replacements for Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, or Amy Poehler, and now they may three more to try to replace. Whatever happens, I’ll be watching SNL regardless. God, knows I stayed with MadTV until the very end, and that was rather hard.

A New Roseanne and John Goodman Show?

Apparently the duo from the hit 90′s show “Roseanne” are going to be in a new show. NBC has picke dup the pilot on the new show that is written and produced by Roseanne herself. Roseanne will be playing the land lady of a mobile home park and John Goodman will be playing the grounds keeper. Who better to play the land lady of a mobile home park? I can’t really think of any. I won’t lie, I’ll probably watch this show. I loved “Roseanne” and have watched all the reruns on Oxygen and Nick At Nite. They are hilarious!

American Idol Dream Gone

This January was way different than many in the past. What was different? I wasn’t counting down the days until American Idol started. I said at the end of last season I wouldn’t watch. It to me represents a show that is in the way down and at; its peaked. Simon Cowell was so right to say he was leaving while the show was on top. I decided to quit watching a season or two after that peak. Not even the funny auditions could have brought me to it this year.

A close concept, The X Factor didn’t do very well on FOX during the fall season. I didn’t watch despite Cowell and the beloved Paula Abdul being on it. Apparently a lot of people didn’t watch. Maybe NBC’s The Voice is the new wave of music singing shows. Its smaller and last flashy than both of FOX’s two shows.

I enjoyed Idol while I watched it and don’t regret wasting three night of my life each week from January to May watching it. Oddly, I don’t feel like it left a TV hole in my heart. Ha… Rather a relief of not having my nights controlled by it.

Kat Dennings Dating Co-Star

Before I get to the subject of this post, I would like to say a bit on Kat Dennings. I have to say that no matter what movie I have seen Kat Dennings in she has instantly been likable. I also have to say that in the fall I was surprised to see she was going to be doing a network television show on CBS. It just seemed like a demotion after being in movies to go to a 30 minute TV show. That show is “2 Broke Girls” and it is one of the funniest comedies on TV at the moment. The creator of the show Whitney Cummings really has a hit on her hands. That is could considering Whitney’s self-titled show “Whitney” is apparently not getting the best reviews(though I enjoy this show as well). Anyway, if anything I now see that “2 Broke Girls” is actually a promotion from the parts Kat played in movies. It is a part where she is one of the two lead characters and really gets to shine.

Now on to the point of this post… Kat Dennings is apparently now dating her co-star Nick Zano. On “2 Broke Girls” Nick plays Kat’s characters love interest. Apparently the two really actually have some chemistry and are having better luck off-screen getting together than their TV characters are on the show. I want to give the “JakeLX Seal of Approval” on this relationship and I wish them the best.

Seacrest Out?

I was shocked to hear about Ryan Seacrest being considered as a replacement for Matt Lauer on “The Today Show” earlier today. My first thought was not “American Idol”, but on his daily radio show that is broadcast all over the world and here in the US on Clear Channel Communications radio stations. Doing “The Today Show” would seriously take a toll on that show and if he moved it to New York City he would be super busy. My second thought when to “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve”. There goes any hope of him taking over for Dick Clark in the future. I doubt “Today’s” network NBC would want him hosting one of their competitors, ABC’s, New Year show. Then finally Idol came to mind. I’m not watching it this year because ever since Paula Abdul left it has been on the downslope. Simon leaving was the nail in the coffin for me. I really think Seacrest leaving would be the nail in the coffin for the show period. Guess we will have to see what happens considering Ryan is still in a contract with Idol and the fact that Ryan really has no news or journalist knowledge past the entertainment industry.

Confused on Casey Anthony

I may get some hate for this, but I have always and always will speak my mind. Honestly, the whole Casey Anthony thing is a little confusing for me. I lived in Florida when the whole thing started and at the time thought how does that happen. Even while the trial was going on I thought how she had to be guilty. But then all these articles and news reports started to talk about how the evidence against Casey wasn’t adding up. When I heard a report or read an article about the evidence I too was seeing how the evidence wasn’t there. When the verdict came back not guilty for Casey I watched live, but wasn’t shocked by the verdict after all I had read and heard on TV. Now this personal video log that she made has been leaked and it has me more confused. She seems so innocent behind the webcam on her computer. She seems to be at peace. She even talks about how her life is getting better and she hopes it keeps getting better. She talks about how she has adopted a dog(which I am tired of people commenting on stuff saying she is probably going to kill it too). It has me wondering if maybe she is innocent? How do we not know that someone else wasn’t to blame and Casey being young and naive was afraid to report she had gone missing, because she was trying to avoid what she actually ended up going through? She very well may have done it and I’m not saying if I think she did or not. I’m saying it is going to be one of those things that we will never know for sure. I guess all the evidence and with everything that came out and still continues to come out has me wondering one thing… What if?

I’m opened minded I guess… And wish we had a definite answer. I think it is easy for a person to not look at the details when a child is involved. I also think it is easy for people to get into the sensationalism and jumping on the bandwagon for hating a person, again especially when a child is involved. See the link below for a look at the “Today Show” report on the video and clips of the video that was leaked.

JakeLX: Top Albums of 2011

It is that time of year again were it is time for me to list the albums that I purchase throughout the year in order from my least favorite to my number one favorite. Now please keep in my that I obviously bought these albums because I liked the music on them, so even if one is listed last, that doesn’t mean I hate the album. This year my album list is heavily dominated by women and British women at that. The 2011 list is for any album that I bought or was given to me between 12.01.10 thru 11.30.11 no matter what the release date was. So you will see some albums that came out in 2010 on this list, but that is due to the fact I didn’t own them untill after December 01, 2010. First you will see the list in descending order to number one. Below that I will explain some of the albums placement which I am sure some will question.

22. Treats(2010)… Sleigh Bells

21. Down The Way(2010)… Angus & Julia Stone

20. Science & Faith… The Script

19. When The Sun Goes Down… Selena Gomez and The Scene

18. Welcome Reality… Nero

17. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy(2010)… Kanye West

16. 21- Adele

15. Saxobeats… Alexandra Stan

14. Goodbye Lullaby… Avril Lavinge(Biggest Disappointment)

13. Siberia… Lights

12. Who You Are… Jesse J

11. Perfectionist… Natalia Kills

10. Love?- Jennifer Lopez

9. Body Talk(2010)- Robyn

8. I Am The Dance Commander… Ke$ha

7. Lights… Ellie Goulding(Biggest Surprise)

6. Talk That Talk… Rihanna

5. Pink Friday(2010)… Nicki Minaj

4. Nothing But The Beat… David Guetta

3. Ceremonials… Florence + The Machine

2. Born This Way… Lady Gaga

1. Femme Fatale… Britney Spears

Okay, now you have seen my list and am probably wondering why I placed some albums where I did. I decide this really on how I responded to each album. What kind of music it is, how fun it was, what was the meaning, how does it compare to the artist past work, ect. I have no set standard and that is what makes this enjoyable to do each year. Depending on how I feel each year makes different types of music take top honours.

The one that I think most people will be shocked to see is where I placed the Grammy nominated Adele’s “21″ album at number 16 out of 22 albums. The reason for this is quite simply two things. First, Adele has released singles of all the songs I liked on the album. You may think that is a good thing. I don’t think so because she released all the songs that would sale. The rest of the album to me is very boring and I quite frankly dislike it. She does have a beautiful voice, but I don’t want that beautiful voice putting me to sleep. Second, Adele-fatigue. Except for the albums singles, I don’t get the buzz for the album as a whole. Again beautiful voice, but very dry and boring except for those released singles.

You may also be surprised to see Britney Spear with “Femme Fatale” in the number one spot. Everyone likes to knock Britney down and say her voice is crap and all of that other garbage. Britney has made a name for herself and she is talented despite what others may say. In second place I have Lady Gaga with “Born This Way” and in third place Flo+The Machine with “Ceremonials”. Both do have far superior voices than Britney Spears, but neither have the legacy that she has. Gaga is making a legacy that she will leave behind, but her and Britney are very different. Britney’s legacy is that of a phoenix come up out of the ashes. The mid-2000′s and on were a roller coaster ride for Britney, but I do believe in 2011 she has proven that she is back and better than ever. She’s Britney, bitch… And she isn’t go anywhere.

As I said number two went to Lady Gaga. I adore Lady Gaga and would have loved to given her the top spot, but I couldn’t. First, Britney deserved it for the reasons I listed above. Second, Britney was my first CD ever with “… Baby One More Time” and I feel like I have grown up with her. I totally go crazy for Gaga though. Again, I find that they are totally different people. “Born This Way” was an excellently crafted work of art from Gaga and I love it. I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next. At the end of the day a fierce comeback and a sentimental reason is why Britney kept Gaga from number one. Again, I must stress how much I love and adore the very talented Lady Gaga. I would also love to request that at some point we get some acoustic or piano album from Gaga. Probably not as her new album, but somewhere in between the bigger albums. She has such a beautiful voice and sometimes the techno beats take from it.

Number three for me wasn’t hard to decide. Flo+The Machine were always going to be in the top five somewhere. Again, sentimental reasons kept her from obtaining the top two spots. The music Florence does is different and not exactly the same as the other two spots and that also held her back from the top two spots. Last year I gave Flo+The Machine the number one spot and “The Biggest Surprise” acknowledgement. This years “Ceremonials” is even bigger and more exciting than last years “Lungs”. This is another girl that I cannot wait to see what she will do next.

Biggest Disappointment— It always sucks when an album isn’t as good as you had hoped it would be. Last year this accolade went to Orianthi’s ”Believe”. This year it went to Avril Lavinge with her album “Goodbye Lullaby”. The thing that may be odd is that it isn’t even the a bad album by a long shot. It is at number 14 out of 22 albums. The fact is, I thought it was going to be a return to the old Avril, the “Complicated” and “Sk8tr Boy” Avril. It almost was and that is what makes it so disappointing. Another thing that makes “Goodbye Lullaby” a disappointment is the fact that we were told it will be out on this date and then this date. The date kept getting pushed further and further back. I guess in my mind she was creating a wonderful masterpiece that was going to be the most awesome thing ever. Avril use to be punk and then by her “Girlfriend” album she was more pop. Luckily, Avril herself said that she is already working on another new album that should be out sometime next year. I think she knows that “Goodbye Lullaby” was an album she did for herself. Again, not a bad album by any means and I love a lot of the songs. It just left me already waiting on the next album. So I wait…

Biggest Surprise— Last years “Biggest Surprise” accolade went to Florence+The Machine. This year it yet again goes to another British women. Ellie Goulding and her album “Lights” was defiantly a pleasant musical surprise this year. I had seen her performance on SNL, but wasn’t sold until I heard “Lights” elsewhere. Ellie Goulding satisfies that dance, electro sound with some how still managing to let her beautiful voice shine through. That probably has a lot to do with her not doing real hard dance style music. Either way if you haven’t given Ellie a try, do cause you are SO missing out. She should have another album out next year as well.

I would have to say that overall 2011 belonged to the British women who seem to be gaining air play on our US airwaves. I call it the Second British Invasion. They all have beautiful voices that deserve to be heard and enjoyed. I hope you enjoyed my view on this year in music and allowing me to list the albums I purchased over the year. I have been told I don;t buy enough albums, but they are enough for me. Please do checkout any of these great artists if you haven’t heard them before. Spotify is an awesome way to checkout many of these artists for FREE. Believe it or not this isn’t a paid ad for Spotify, though maybe they should pay me. Spotify is just the way I first listened to a lot of these artist.
