Taylor Demands A Full Stage

If you watched the 2013 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, you were treated to the debut live performance of Taylor Swift’s newest single “22″. Unlike her other hit singles, it had yet to be featured live on TV for the masses. It was done in a very unique way and demanded not only a full stage, but also the use of the “backstage” areas and going through the crowd.

While I won’t go into detail about everything in the performance, I will say Taylor was one of the best performances of the night. She literally had so much going on that you shouldn’t have even thought about being bored. She was also the only performer there to use the two wings off of the main stage for dancers and screens. Who said Taylor Swift couldn’t host stadium shows? She certainly was able to feel the MGM Grands performance area to the brim.

She started in the backstage area, rode on a bike on some guys back from the entrance to the arena to the stage. Then in the middle she had some breakdown with the Jabbawockeez dancers, and then to end it all, she showers the crowd with red balloons. The balloon  move was truly a way of Taylor saying this is my stage, bitches.

Now watch the performance below and tell me what you think in the comments. After that go buy the single, or better yet, the whole Red album if you haven’t already.

Yellow- Chelsea Lankes

A week ago today I sat in the arena waiting for Taylor Swift to come out and perform. Before her show they play music with music I assume Taylor picks or what would be on her iPod if we could see it. This song came on and for some reason I was instantly entranced. I couldn’t figure out what the song was, but I knew the version I was hearing was actually a cover. Unfortunately, my Shazam app was not working to do all of the audience noise. The show started and I moved on with life and forgot about it.

A few days later it popped in my head, so in thirty minutes of searching, I knew it was a Coldplay song, which I should have known. I also was led to a cover by Sara Bareilles which I didn’t care for and knew it wasn’t the song I was looking for. Finally with some luck I came across Chelsea Lankes’ version. I knew once it started I had found it. Digging up deep I saw Chelsea Lankes is from Nashville, so I knew I had the right song I wanted. I assume Lankes is a friend of Taylor or someone from Nashville that Taylor really adores and wanted the world to hear her music.

“Yellow” by Coldplay will be 14-years-old in June, so why do I care about a cover of the song from a new comer? Because I really enjoy the way the cover is arranged and the way Chelsea Lankes voice goes with the music. The music is this synthy electronic vibe that seems so modern. It’s not hard, its soft, and then Chelsea Lankes voice just flows with it so perfectly. It really can put you in a trance if you’re not careful.

While I haven’t listened to the rest of Chelsea Lankes’ EP Ringing Bell, I can say I hope it sounds more like this. I look forward to listening to the EP in the near future. You can definitely except a review of it right here.

Listen to “Yellow” down below and tell me what you think of the cover in the comment section.Chelsea’s contacts are below the video.

“Crazy” by Gnarls Barkely Cover By Phillip Phillips & Churchill

April 18, 2013 Phillip Phillips, last years American Idol winner, put on a concert at Eastern Kentucky University(EKU) in Richmond, KY. The concert was great and I’ll vlog about it at a later date. The opening band was an unknown to me band called Churchill. During the encore Phillip Phillips and Churchill performed a cover of “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. It was really unique and awesome. Enjoy!

Miley Is Grown Up… Get Over It!

I am tired of hearing every time Miley Cyrus does something not child-like, the media and the public gets upset. I feel bad for her because it seems like people have a hard time letting go of the Hannah Montana identity. People, she’s twenty and engaged… She is so not the little girl that she once was. She can cut her hair without gaining our consent. She probably did it to start a new chapter of her life; to get rid of the look she has always had and is known for as Hannah Montana.

The newest issue of Cosmopolitan is the newest Miley scandal since she graces the cover with her inner boobs showing. It’s not like she is the centerfold and cover of the latest Playboy. I think it is a good move for her to do this cover the way she did it. Maybe it can finally get through to people that she isn’t a Disney channel starlet anymore. She is a new adult Miley with an adult haircut, new adult music(hopefully) coming out soon, and a husband.

Some people say she is alienating her fan base, but people seem to forget that her fan base is grown up as well. We aren’t the same younger kids as we were either. We are older and can handle her inner side boobs and her big girl haircut. I think some people think she must act conservatively because her father is a country singer. I ask you, have you seen some of the clothes those country women wear?

Just remember… She’s just being Miley.

A New Idol

As American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said tonight at the beginning of the show, a new era for Idol has begun. An era that seems to be filled with drama fueled by the drama mama diva, Mariah Carey, herself. You could tell from the beginning the producers were going to play up the Minaj vs. Carey in a big way. The very first time you see the two together, they are rolling eyes and taking jabs at each other.

I really had no idea that Mariah Carey is so egotistical. I mean, yeah, she has an awesome voice and can hit those high notes, but personality as to count in there somewhere. Right? She really comes across as someone who thinks she is better than anyone else in the room. She really needs to remember that many younger viewers really can’t recall anything that she has done except for her amazing Christmas albums. I’m 22 and cannot think of a name of any chart topping song. I think one of the most annoying things about her on this show is how she brings every thing back to her. You could literally be talking about doing anything and she has a comparable story or something that can top it.

I think one of the funniest things tonight was when Nicki started doing her British accent. Guess what? Mariah started doing it too. It seemed like they were both trying to top the others use of the accent. It reminded me of when Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne’s characters in Bridesmaids started to try to top the other’s speech at the engagement party. It was kind of ridiculous on Mariah’s part, considering it was obviously something that Nicki was doing before she started.

In case you think I came into the show rooting for Nicki, you’re wrong. I thought maybe Nicki was provoking Mariah, a lady I assumed was down to earth and caring. I was wrong. Mariah comes across as I’ve stated, egotistical and even fake. She just seems genuinely fake to most of the contestants. But, hey! It is a win-win for Idol, because they got people like me watching after getting so bored with it two seasons ago that are watching again. So, way to go FOX and Idol.

I can’t wait to see what comes of the drama throughout the season. We have still yet to see the big blow up that occurred to make Mariah, “scared” for her life. That should be good since now Mariah has extra security because she is afraid that Nicki is going to kill her. Now if that isn’t drama, I’m not sure what exactly is?

Now it is your turn to let me know what your thoughts were on tonight’s Idol, and on the Nicki and Mariah feud down below in the comments. It is much appreciated! Thanks!

-Jake

Language- Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson is quickly becoming one of my favourite DJ’s and I look forward to the stuff that he releases. This song was released back in the spring, but like Zedd’s “Spectrum”, I hadn’t really given “Language” a deep listen, I just danced to it without a care in the world.

The song is a great song to dance to and it builds and builds. Eventually the song gets to the top and comes back down with a sound that sounds like what magic must sound like. Some light vocal work is added towards the end of the song, but it does nothing to overshadow Porter Robinson’s talent with sound. I think the biggest problem with this song is it is too short and I think it should’ve been longer. That also could just be because I love the way it sounds and just want it to continue a minute or two longer.

Take a listen and tell me you don’t have this song on repeat. Also, let me know what you think about “Language” and Porter Robinson down below in the comment section.

Spectrum- Zedd feat. Matthew Koma

Zedd has been making a name for himself since he decided to dive into the world of electronic dance music(EDM). His popularity has only grown as his remixes of Skrillex, Lady Gaga, and The Black Eyed Peas have become massively popular. Now he is ready to give us his own music and he surely hasn’t disappointed. Released June 1, 2012, as his first single for his first album, Clarity, “Spectrum” has climbed and set at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

I feel like while this song as been out, I just now this fall have fallen in love with it. The music is produced in such a way that it gives you goose bumps. It really honestly, just sound cool. The song is musically beautiful and spectacular. The beat keeps the song going without even a small place to stop. You are gonna want to dance, trust me. The vocals are done by Matthew Koma. I will be honest and tell you that I thought it was a woman singing it the first few times I heard it despite it saying it featured someone named Matthew. Either this guys voice is really high-pitched or a computer has helped make it be higher pitched. Either way ti doesn’t matte, because the sound and tone work with the song so well.

The song seems to be about a couple who people think shouldn’t be together, but they are going to stay together regardless. I think that is a story that can stand the test of time…Romeo and Juliet, anyone?

Anything Could Happen- Ellie Goulding

Fresh off the heels of her 2011 release of ”Lights”, that just became popular this year here in the states, is this amazing song, “Anything Could Happen”. The song showcases Ellie Goulding’s powerful and amazing vocals that just aren’t showcased during “Lights”. Personally, I feel like this song is one of Ellie Goulding’s best and she seems more mature in this song compared to lights. It is still yet to be seen whether or not this single will be able to reach the success of “Lights”. I don’t hold faith in the American audience to embrace the song for what it is truly worth.

This song like most of Ellie’s songs has a story to be told and that story is told in the best way Ellie knows how, in lyrics. The song is about a couple who go through something horrible and meet up on the other side after death. The music video shows it that way. A couple who die in a car wreck are reunited on the other side in death. Only Ellie Goulding could make such a dark and gloomy song seem upbeat and beautiful.

So, what do you think of Ellie’s new song? Love it? Hate it? Let me know in the comment section below.

She Wolf(Falling To Pieces)- David Guetta feat. Sia

Who was tired of David Guetta and Sia’s “Titanium”? How many times had “Titanium” been played over the course of this past summer? Honestly, I couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you is I still liked “Titanium” by summers end. It even made my Top 20 Songs of Summer 2012. I was just ready to move on, and I was able to with this duo’s next single, “She Wolf”.

“She Wolf” doesn’t step too far away from what Guetta and Sia have already mastered. His hard beats and awesome breakdowns, and her heavenly vocals mixed to create another amazing song. This song I think I like more than “Titanium”. I can’t tell you why exactly, except maybe mentally, I’m exhausted from “Titanium”. I would say I probably like the theme and I think Guetta’s musical performance is much better in “She Wolf” than it is in “Titanium”.

I think the music video is really cool as well. It isn’t some over the top, huge production of a music video, but it is cool. The story of the girl being a werewolf and the snow is what drives it. Do watch and listen to this awesome song. Let me know what you think about the song and the music video below in the comment section.

The A Team- Ed Sheeran

This song is probably up there with one of my favourites at the moment. I heard this song late-summer and decided to find out who it was, which was easy with the Shazam app. I was led to Ed Sheeran who recently released and album that I really enjoy. Then a week or two after I started to listen to him, Taylor Swift started promoting his album. Turns out she had done a song with him on her new album Red. Ed Sheeran will also be opening for her The Red Tour this year. So, I can’t wait to see him when I see Taylor.

The A Team is obviously about a girl who does drugs and has a drug addiction problem and then who becomes a prostitute. She clearly has a rough life and then she decides that she is ready to just die. You wouldn’t think a song that seemed so happy music-wise could be so dark and intriguing, but it is what it is. I’ve read stuff where the above is what Sheeran himself said the song was about, so it’s a pretty easy song to get the message. He said the song is called The A Team cause the girl does crack and heroin which are considered class A drugs.

While diving in deeper for myself I also wonder if it has to do with the girls eventual death. The A Team would lead me to believe she becomes an angel. However, there is a part in the song where Sheeran sings that “it’s too cold for angels to fly”, which could mean that she doesn’t get to become an angel. I also could see it meaning that she’s an angel, but the cold world doesn’t allow her to fly and be all that she could become. You really could take it anyway.

The song has been playing on mix radio and adult contemporary radio here in the US. Now that is has jumped into the top 40, I hope to start hearing it on more Top 40 radio stations. I’m sure touring with Taylor Swift in 2013 and this songs semi-success will help make him even more popular here in the US.
