Language- Porter Robinson

Porter Robinson is quickly becoming one of my favourite DJ’s and I look forward to the stuff that he releases. This song was released back in the spring, but like Zedd’s “Spectrum”, I hadn’t really given “Language” a deep listen, I just danced to it without a care in the world.

The song is a great song to dance to and it builds and builds. Eventually the song gets to the top and comes back down with a sound that sounds like what magic must sound like. Some light vocal work is added towards the end of the song, but it does nothing to overshadow Porter Robinson’s talent with sound. I think the biggest problem with this song is it is too short and I think it should’ve been longer. That also could just be because I love the way it sounds and just want it to continue a minute or two longer.

Take a listen and tell me you don’t have this song on repeat. Also, let me know what you think about “Language” and Porter Robinson down below in the comment section.

Spectrum- Zedd feat. Matthew Koma

Zedd has been making a name for himself since he decided to dive into the world of electronic dance music(EDM). His popularity has only grown as his remixes of Skrillex, Lady Gaga, and The Black Eyed Peas have become massively popular. Now he is ready to give us his own music and he surely hasn’t disappointed. Released June 1, 2012, as his first single for his first album, Clarity, “Spectrum” has climbed and set at the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

I feel like while this song as been out, I just now this fall have fallen in love with it. The music is produced in such a way that it gives you goose bumps. It really honestly, just sound cool. The song is musically beautiful and spectacular. The beat keeps the song going without even a small place to stop. You are gonna want to dance, trust me. The vocals are done by Matthew Koma. I will be honest and tell you that I thought it was a woman singing it the first few times I heard it despite it saying it featured someone named Matthew. Either this guys voice is really high-pitched or a computer has helped make it be higher pitched. Either way ti doesn’t matte, because the sound and tone work with the song so well.

The song seems to be about a couple who people think shouldn’t be together, but they are going to stay together regardless. I think that is a story that can stand the test of time…Romeo and Juliet, anyone?

Gangnam Style- Psy

How could someone not dance to this song that seems to put a smile on everyone’s face? Some try to critique the song when I find that there is nothing to be critiqued. I will not be doing that. I am here to say that this song, the viral sensation of the fall, is fun. It’s just that. It has made Psy a household name and brought K-Pop into the light to millions of people. Can the hugely popular in South Korea singer can keep is popularity in America? That is to be seen. It doesn’t matter it is a song that for the duration connects and brings the world together.

The song as also become the most watched music video in the world on You Tube where as of writing, it has obtained 889,107,485 views. That is amazing and crazy! I tip my no-existent hat to Psy.

RATING: 5/5(FOR PURE ENJOYABLILTY AND HAPPINESS)

Anything Could Happen- Ellie Goulding

Fresh off the heels of her 2011 release of ”Lights”, that just became popular this year here in the states, is this amazing song, “Anything Could Happen”. The song showcases Ellie Goulding’s powerful and amazing vocals that just aren’t showcased during “Lights”. Personally, I feel like this song is one of Ellie Goulding’s best and she seems more mature in this song compared to lights. It is still yet to be seen whether or not this single will be able to reach the success of “Lights”. I don’t hold faith in the American audience to embrace the song for what it is truly worth.

This song like most of Ellie’s songs has a story to be told and that story is told in the best way Ellie knows how, in lyrics. The song is about a couple who go through something horrible and meet up on the other side after death. The music video shows it that way. A couple who die in a car wreck are reunited on the other side in death. Only Ellie Goulding could make such a dark and gloomy song seem upbeat and beautiful.

So, what do you think of Ellie’s new song? Love it? Hate it? Let me know in the comment section below.

Sweet Nothing- Calvin Harris feat. Florence Welch

Calvin Harris is quickly becoming one of my favourite DJ’s in the realm of EDM, though I think his true home might just be in pop. He is able to put together his music that he has produced with the right sound of voice. You might have first heard him on Rihanna’s track “We Found Love”. The tracks that are his with featured artist that you may know are “Bounce” feat. Kelis and the summer hit “Feel So Close” where Harris himself sings the vocals.

“Sweet Nothing” has that sound that I love and the pairing of Harris’ music and Florence Welch’s vocals, of Florence and The Machine, are pure awesomeness. Welch’s voice sings like a heavenly angel on a track that seem to be about a bad relationship that neither one seems to be trying to get out of. Can “Sweet Nothing” obtain the popularity of “Feel So Close” and the Ne-Yo sung “Let’s Go”? Time will tell, but the track as so far only obtained a #82 on the Billboard Hot 100, but hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

Let me know below in the comment section what you think of this track, Calvin Harris, or Florence Welch.

The A Team- Ed Sheeran

This song is probably up there with one of my favourites at the moment. I heard this song late-summer and decided to find out who it was, which was easy with the Shazam app. I was led to Ed Sheeran who recently released and album that I really enjoy. Then a week or two after I started to listen to him, Taylor Swift started promoting his album. Turns out she had done a song with him on her new album Red. Ed Sheeran will also be opening for her The Red Tour this year. So, I can’t wait to see him when I see Taylor.

The A Team is obviously about a girl who does drugs and has a drug addiction problem and then who becomes a prostitute. She clearly has a rough life and then she decides that she is ready to just die. You wouldn’t think a song that seemed so happy music-wise could be so dark and intriguing, but it is what it is. I’ve read stuff where the above is what Sheeran himself said the song was about, so it’s a pretty easy song to get the message. He said the song is called The A Team cause the girl does crack and heroin which are considered class A drugs.

While diving in deeper for myself I also wonder if it has to do with the girls eventual death. The A Team would lead me to believe she becomes an angel. However, there is a part in the song where Sheeran sings that “it’s too cold for angels to fly”, which could mean that she doesn’t get to become an angel. I also could see it meaning that she’s an angel, but the cold world doesn’t allow her to fly and be all that she could become. You really could take it anyway.

The song has been playing on mix radio and adult contemporary radio here in the US. Now that is has jumped into the top 40, I hope to start hearing it on more Top 40 radio stations. I’m sure touring with Taylor Swift in 2013 and this songs semi-success will help make him even more popular here in the US.

Ho Hey- The Lumineers

Let me tell you, I was very caught off guard when this track came into my life. I liked Ho Hey, which was fine until I found out it was from an indie folk group called The Lumineers. I thought, I can’t like folk music, can I? Turns out I don’t like folk music. Not even half way through a listen of The Lumineers first album and I was good and secure that while I don’t like folk, I do like Ho Hey. The rest of their album reminds me of older country music and I am not a fan.

Ho Hey is great though! The song really is a nice step away from today’s typically digitalized music. It also has a good beat that drives the song that never lets down throughout the track. The track is a love song about a guy who doesn’t seem to have a lot in life, but he knows that the girl he likes is all that he needs. He is pretty much trying to tell her that the guy she is with isn’t right for her and that they belong together. They lyrics say “ho, hey..”, but I don’t think he’s calling the girl a ho. Unless he is… And he hid it well.

The song as went viral and has been used in television commercials and movie trailers. It is yet to be seen if the group will just have this one hit or if they can become a main stay in pop culture. I don’t know if there is another song of theirs that can, but hey with groups like Mumford and Sons and The Civil Wars doing well, maybe they can. Even if they aren’t uber-popular, I feel like this group would probably be okay with that. You can tell that they have a love for music and specifically the music that they make. So, how do you like Ho Hey? Let me know in the comment section below.

Little Talks- Of Monsters And Men

Haven’t heard this song yet? That’s okay, cause you found this page and you can hear it now. The song is by an Icelandic group called Of Monsters And Men. This little song has gone on the hit the charts internationally. It was apparently first played by a radio station in Philadelphia called Radio 104.5. It has since gotten quite popular and as of writing sits at #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. I’ve been hearing it on the two Top 40 stations on SiriusXM. One of the stations is voter produced, so its being voted on.

The song has this upbeat musical arrangement, but that may mask the lyrics. If you just listen to the song you would think it is about a breakup where the people use to be very in love. Looking at the lyrics on the computer has kind of showed a possible darker meaning. Could it be about the guy dying and the girl contemplating suicide to be with the guy on the other side? Also, possibly the guys ghost is trying to get her to kill herself so that they can be together again, but they guy also doesn’t want her to do that, there is a lyric saying “don’t listen to a word I say”.

After I read the lyrics and got that meaning I Googled to see if I could find the meaning. Honestly, everyone else seems to be just confused as I am. It seems a lot of people had my first conclusion, and then many seem to pick up on the possible darker meaning. I agree with some other comments that the lyrics seem when reading them are confusing and don’t seem to fit. I assume that could be a translation issue or maybe the lyrics are wrong, but they sound right.  I personally think the song may have the darker meaning, but it seems like the girl overcomes the thoughts of suicide and it shows she fought it. The music video is bizarre and seems to have nothing to do with the lyrics or song at all. It isn’t very helpful with the meaning, which music videos these days never seem to go with what the songs seem to mean.

It is totally possible that I have found a deeper meaning to the song then it was ever supposed to be. Regardless, the song is catchy and it will probably be playing on your local Top 40 station sometime this winter if it already isn’t. So, listen to the song below and let me know what you think and what you think the song could possible be about in the comment section below.

Diamonds- Rihanna

When Diamonds was released on September 27 I will admit I wasn’t a fan. Then on October 2 it was released to radio for airplay. I wasn’t thrilled or amused. I just couldn’t understand why such a slow song was released as a lead single for Rihanna’s new album Unapologetic. I will also admit that due to the slowness, I really never gave it a shot or listened to the lyrics.

Thanks to the radio, listen after listen had me falling in love with this song. Lyrically, vocally, and musically it is a beautiful. The song lyrically seems to fit many different things in Rihanna’s life. Could it fit her breaking free from her destructive relationships and finally finding happiness alone or with someone else? Could it be her finally just getting to a place in her life that she is finally truly really happy? Who knows what Rihanna saw the song as, maybe just a beautiful song that she really wanted to sing. The fact is the song was written by Sia Furler. The song was never written specifically for Rihanna, but was played for her and apparently she liked it.

Vocally, Rihanna comes off stunning. While no one has ever said Rihanna has a bad singing voice, not all of her songs in the past have shown what her pipes are capable of doing. This song allows for Rihanna to really spotlight her song as her vocals intertwine with the music to create a stunning song.

Musically, the song is catchy. Like I said above it isn’t in the way of Rihanna’s vocals and is the background or platform for Rihanna’s vocals to stand on and be the spotlight of the song. I really am a fan of how the music builds from the beginning to the chorus and then back down again to build back up to the chorus once again. Despite the songs slower pace, it really does have a driving beat that keeps the song alive and moving to keep the listener engaged.

Overall, I think sometimes not liking a song right off of release can be a good thing. I feel like I am somewhat closer to this now and can enjoy it more because I had to piece together what makes this terrific song amazing and now one of my favourite Rihanna songs. I say to anyone out there that is like I was and hasn’t given this song a true chance, give it a chance. You might just fall in love with it as I did.

I’d like to know what your thoughts are on Diamonds or even Rihanna as an artist. Please leave comments below in the comment section.

Top Songs of Summer 2012 (#5-#1)

See the rest of the songs HERE:

#1. “Pontoon”- Little Big Town

Now I am not a country fan, however I feel like a the top summer song if available should be a song that includes having a good time doing something fun during the summer. This song got my number 1 because “Call Me Maybe” isn’t really a summer specific song despite it having to be the most played song of the summer. “Pontoon” also has really great lyrics and really turns into a song that is SUMMER and makes you feel like you are floating on the lake with your friends. It also helps that Little Big Town doesn’t seem to be TOO country.

-Released April 30, 2012

-First single from their new album Tornado(due out September 11, 2012)

-Peaked at #1 on the US Country Chart and #22 on the US Hot 100 chart

#2. “Call Me Maybe”- Carly Rae Jepsen

If you pick a summer song based on how viral the song is, how amny times it has been played on radio, and if you are hearing it everywhere, this song would be number one. Unfortuantly for Carl Rae, there was a summery song that that beat odds and went pretty high on the regular charts despite its genre not typically charting well unless you count Taylor Swift.

-Released September 20, 2011(Canada), February 20, 2012(Europe), February 22, 2012(US)

-First single off of Carly’s new album Kiss(due out September 18, 2012)

-Peaked at # 1 on US Pop Songs & Hot 100, #2 on US Adult Pop Songs, #4 on US Adult Contemporary, & #8 on US Hot Dance Club Songs charts.

-Certified Platinum 5x in the US

#3. “Lights”- Ellie Goulding

-Released March 13, 2011

-First US single and the sixth UK single from her debut album Lights(released February 26, 2010)

-Spent a year and three months on the US Hot 100 Chart before finally peaking at #2 this summer.

-It also charted# 1 on US Pop Songs, #4 on US Adult Pop Songs, #18 on US Adult Contemporary, & #32 on US Hot Dance Club Songs charts.

-Ellie Goulding’s second album comes out October 8, 2012

#4. “Feel So Close”- Calvin Harris

-Released August 19, 2011

-The second single from his new album 18 Months(due out October 29, 2012)

- Second song to chart(first one was “We Found Love” by Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris).

-Peaked at # 8 on US Pop Songs, #12 on US Hot 100, #28 on US Adult Pop, & #33 on US Hot Dance Club Songs charts.

#5. “Wide Awake”- Katy Perry

-Released May 22, 2012

-Second single off of the rereleased Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection(released March 26, 2012).

-Tenth #1 single on US Hot Dance Club Songs chart and her ninth #1 sing on the Mainstream Top 40(Pop Songs) chart tying her and Rihanna with the most #1’s on that chart.

-Also charted #2 US Hot 100(her eleventh consecutive top ten hit), #1 US Pop Songs, #1 US Adult Pop Songs, #10 US Adult Contemporary.
